1. A small, but important step. 

    Around the beginning of this year, the State Department began using gender-neutral language on U.S. passports — replacing “father” and “mother” with “Parent One” and Parent Two” — to make it simpler for nontraditional parents, beyond the male/female combination, to get passports for their children.

  2. Arturo Valenzuela was director of the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Georgetown’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service while I was studying there. We were all proud to see him leave for the State Department, but are happy to hear that he will be rejoining CLAS. 

    I would love to hear the real reasons behind why he is choosing to resign as assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs. I assume he will have a session at Georgetown to discuss his time working with the Obama administration - can’t wait for that!
