I had my dreads for about 3 years :( I miss them. I dreaded them when my hair was very long (past my bust) so I had a lot of hair to work with. My hair is stick straight so there was no chance for natural dreads to form even when I stopped brushing and using conditioner, nothing happened. I was living in Baltimore at the time and I called a few salons to see if they had a young hip stylist who was willing to give me an extra hand in separating my hair. I knew I wanted to leave the front bang area straight so I could have some diverse styling and I knew I wanted each dread to be relatively the same size. So I found a young lady who worked with me for about 5 hours to separate and backcomb my hair. I used wax for the first few month but DO NOT recommend that. A few months into my dreads I found out that using a tiny crochet hook was the best way to tighten the dreads, new growth, and tuck in the fly aways. This VIDEO is the one I used at the time because it has a good visual, but there are a tons up now. A crochet hook is really all you need, I can make a hearty mature dread on anyones hair in like 2 minutes backcombing then crocheting it.

This is a pic of me a few days before I dreaded it Feb 2008

This is May 2008 before I found out about the crochet hook technique.

Sept 2008 still frizzy and loose without mastering the crochet hook

October 2008 I really started to use only the crochet hook!

April 2009 perfectly tight mature dreads, no products or wax.

    2010 fun styles!!!
